Following the announcement that 29-year-old Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa is to be the new Time Lord, we take a look back at some of the Scottish thespians who have been lucky enough to get leading roles in this iconic Sci-Fi series.

Sylvester McCoy – The 7th Doctor

The Scottish actor Sylvester McCoy was the first Scot to play the Doctor when he succeeded Colin Baker in 1987, McCoy stayed in the part until the original series ended in 1989. He returned in “Doctor Who the Movie” in 1996 before handing over the TARDIS keys to Paul McGann.

David Tennant – The 10th Doctor

Succeeding Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor in the revived series in 2005 David Tennant went on to become one of the most popular Doctors in the series. He was the only Doctor to regenerate back to himself before finally handing over to Matt Smith.

Peter Capaldi – The 12th Doctor

At the end of the Christmas episode, Twice Upon A Time, Peter Capaldi regenerates into the show’s first or is it the second female Doctor Who?

Ncuti Gatwa – The 14th Doctor

Following on from Jodie Whittaker, Ncuti Gatwa who was born in Nyarugenge, Rwanda and raised in Scotland is set to become the 14th Doctor.
